WWII Locomotives & War nº 94 - By Carlos Briz

Submarine Aurora - 1/275
Figures - Pendraken
Veichles - Pendraken, Pithead e Minifigs

(Class C50 locomotive - Japan National Railways)

It's number 94, and counting!

That's right guys, we are coming on the 100 mark real quick, regarding the number of dios made by CB, related to WWII locomotives!

This time we have a Japanese locomotive, couppled with a submarine and a seaplane.

This pic turned out great!

The I-19 is a famous Japanese sub, since during the Guadalcanal campaign it made an attack that turned out to be a tough act to follow: with a single salvo of six torpedoes, it managed to sink a aircraft carrier (USS Wasp), a destroyer (USS O'Brien), and severly damage a battleship (USS North Carolina).

There is also at least one bad record associated with the I-19 crew, since in May 1943, after sinking a merchant ship, these guys surfaced and machine gunned some of the surviving sailors. Their adventures at sea finnaly ended in November 1943, when this sub was sank by the USS Radford.

Christmas Presents to the Brigada Tripeira members!

Once again, this year we scheduled a meeting in the city of Coimbra, for the anual lunch between the Brigada Tripeira members, since, as you know, we have guys from several parts of Portugal and it is not easy to get all of us together in one place often.

And guess what: Santa Claus also came to town!

Thats right guys, once again the members of our group received their anual membership benefit, translated in several outstanding dios, given by our private Santa Claus, a,k.a. Carlos Briz!

And here you have some pics related to the dios that CB offered us: put out your napkins and drool all you want...

This one was JMM's gift

This one is mine, mine, all mine!

JP got this one.

Well, this year JMM did not resort to his usual whining, in order to get his hands on the dio he wanted

My guess is that he is still embarassed by the scene he made last year...

WWI Locomotives & War - by Carlos Briz

Figures - Magister Militum
(Class 422 locomotive - Belgian State Railways)

CB is back to WWI!

That's right, and this time he brings us a dio related to a river crossing made in the face of a well entrenched enemy. And as an added bonus, the assaulting troops have a locomotive blocking their exit to the other side.

But on the other hand, who said war was as easy as pie??

In this dio the infantry owns the picture, and in real life this would be a meat grinder, for most, if not all, of those guys.

An interesting description of a sucessfull defense of a river (the Marne) crossing by American troops against the Germans, during WWI, can be found in page 80, of the excelent book "American Voices of World War I - Primary Source Documents, 1917-1920"

Here you can check out a cavalry unit in reserve, just in case...

ModelMaia 2014 (2nd Edition)

Battlegroup demo game (15mm).
Fall Of The Reich scenario.

That's right, this year our group was once again invited to attend this fantastic event (modelling exhibition and competition), sponsored by the Maia municipality and Marsigor and organized by our friends from the IMPS-Maia.

Congratulations to all those involved in the organization in this great event!

As usual, our "job" was to promote wargaming, and maybe try to bring to our hobby a few geeks from the modelling business.

We are still using the outstanding Battlegroup rules, related to WWII, for two main reasons:

a) These are really great rules, allowing for realistic wargaming at the tactical level, within a reasonable time frame; and (as important...)

b) JF is still in the mood of buying, painting and lending us all the soldiers, tanks and terrain necessary for wargaming...

You are a SAINT JF!!!

(here you can see our private saint, below, left side)

Aqui podemos ver alguns elementos da Brigada Tripeira a trocar tiros à queima-roupa...na mesa de jogo.

Fantastic models and fantastic scenarios! Thanks JF!

Aqui podemos ver o PC com o ar preocupado de quem está a levar um enxerto de porrada no jogo...

The built-up areas allowed for a fun and realistic use of infantry units

Check out these two great Churchill tanks!

The game objective

CB brought a lot of his models to this show, as you can see, that were a great addition to the show.

USS Olympia - Spanish - American War

USS Olympia  - 1/232 Revell/Encore
Figures - Pendraken
Civil people - Musket Miniatures
Sailors - Rod Langton Miniatures

(Class 1-3-0 T locomotive - Sugar Plantation Railway)

That's right guys, CB is taking a break from the WWI scene, to bring us another FANTASTIC dio!

Who cares about the locomotive?

Check out this outstanding warship!

The USS Olympia was a protected cruiser that saw service in the US Navy from 1895 until 1922, and fought at the battle of Manila Bay (that took place in 1 May 1898), during the Spanish-American War

This ship is still in "active service" nowadays, since it is used as a museum ship (Independence Seaport Museum) in city of Philadelphia (US state of Pennsylvania), although it seems that it needs urgent repairs.

Keep bringing it CB!

WWI Locomotives & War - by Carlos Briz

Figures - Pendraken

(Class 060 locomotive - Great Western Railways)

The WWI saga goes on!

Here it is, another great dio, this time related to the Home Front, where CB translates the hustle and tussle associated with the boarding of men and materiel in a loading dock, destined for the front.

There are samples for every taste, from artillery pieces to cavalry units of every kind (with a suspended water tank, as icing on the cake...)!

From the American Civil War, where, for the first time, trains where extensively used to transport substancial quantities of men and hardware around the war theatre, to the war of 1866, involving the Prussians, trains became a relevant strategic factor, that was also extensively considered during WWI.

Keep bringing them on CB!

WWI Locomotives & War - by Carlos Briz

Figures - Magister Militum

(Class 0-3-0-0 locomotive - French Northen Region Railways)

This is a big one!

From the Russian steppes to the French vineyards, but still within the 1914's time frame, CB brings us another great dio related to WWI.

In 1914 and , we can say, as usual, the German juggernaut carried everything in it's front, until a deadlock became installed, in the form  of trenches, stretching for miles within the western front.

For those of you interested in a good war story related to WWI, do not miss out on the book "Storm of Steel", by Ernest Jünger, who conveys his experiences as a front line officer, leading troops in extensive trench warfare.

CB: now I want to see a locomotive used in the Gallipoli Campaign!
